Nvidia Is Making Games More Lifelike With AI in 2023

Nvidia has announced the Omniverse Avatar Cloud Engine for Games, which combines a number of different AI-based features and functions into a single, all-in-one package for games. AI-based upgrades for non-player characters (NPCs) in video games have been talked about as one of the most interesting ways to use AIs today, and it looks like Nvidia may be one of the first companies to take this seriously.
Nvidia is different from its competitors because it is putting all of its efforts into AI. What happens:
The AI tool uses natural language dialogue, audio-to-facial-expression integration, and text-to-speech/speech-to-text functions. The people who make games, middleware, and tools can build and use custom AI models for speech, conversation, and animation in games and software.
Nvidia ACE for Games is made up of three important parts, each of which does something different. First, there’s Nvidia NeMo, which is an AI framework made to train and deploy Language and Linguistic Models (LLMs).
NeMo Guardrails is a feature that developers can use to make sure that AI conversations are safe and appropriate. By using Guardrails, the system can stop NPCs from responding to inappropriate or off-topic prompts. This keeps the integrity of interactions in the game. Guardrails also provide important security measures that protect the AI from being manipulated or used in a bad way.
Next up is Nvidia Riva, which is the company’s all-in-one solution for converting speech to text and text to speech without any problems. In the ACE for Games workflow, players can use their microphones to ask questions, which Riva then turns into text input in a quick and easy way. The LLM then looks at this text and makes a text response that matches it. Lastly, Riva finishes the loop by turning the text response back into speech, so the user can hear the character’s response as if it were real.
Nvidia Omniverse Audio2Face is the last piece of the puzzle that makes up ACE for Games. This tool makes it easier to get into the game by making the characters’ facial expressions match what they say. Omniverse Audio2Face is currently in beta, but it lets developers make characters that show emotions and expressions in a realistic way. This makes interactions in games feel more real overall.

There’s a good chance that ACE for Games will be very interesting to watch when it finally gets going. At the moment, ray tracing is the most impressive real-world AI use case that the company has. Cyberpunk 2077’s RT Overdrive mode is one of the most well-known and impressive uses of ray tracing. It came about because Nvidia worked with the game’s developer, CD Projekt RED.
In the past, Nvidia’s AI-based tech has proven to be very flexible, as modders have been able to add it to games that don’t have these features by default. A modder setting up Nvidia DLSS and AMD and Intel’s own upscaling technologies in Fallout 4 is a good example. There’s a chance that ACE for Games will be just as flexible, but we won’t know for sure until later.
During a Computex pre-briefing, Nvidia VP of GeForce Platform Jason Paul told me that yes, the tech can scale to more than one character at a time and could theoretically let NPCs talk to each other, but he admitted that he hadn’t seen that tested.
It’s not clear if any developer will use the whole ACE toolkit the way the demo does, but S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2 Heart of Chernobyl and Fort Solis will use the part Nvidia calls “Omniverse Audio2Face,” which tries to match the facial animation of a 3D character to their voice actor’s speech.
